Guest Post: Dry Babe for Hot Mamas! (and a Super Cool Nightgown Giveaway)

Standard

A guest post by Wendy Collett, creator of Dry Babe:

In my business, I hear it all the time.  The changes to our bodies brought on by our dipping hormone levels are wreaking havoc on our health, our happiness our relationships and our sleep.  Like so many of you, I am not one to take this lying down – so to speak.

Sleep – Who Needs It? Turns out we all do:

A recent survey from the Better Sleep Council found that an increasing number of women feel that a good night’s sleep, like proper diet and exercise, is central to their overall health and well being. However, while they may understand this critical link, the poll also shows that women are failing to get the sleep they need.

Previous research shows that women are more sleep deprived than men, having greater difficulty falling and staying asleep and experiencing more daytime sleepiness. This most recent survey also found that some groups of women are experiencing more sleep loss than others. Regardless, women are united in their need to make sleep a priority to ensure optimal health and happiness.

 Quick Facts from the Survey

  • Sixty-eight percent (68%) of American women admit to sleeping less (and many much less) than recommended average of eight hours per night.
  • The top four factors that rob women of sleep:
    • Work- and/or family-related stress
    • Night Sweats
    • Ailments such as an allergy or cold
    • Uncomfortable mattress or pillow
  • One-third of women respondents feel that a balanced lifestyle requires a proper diet, regular exercise, and a good night’s sleep.

And so do we – which is the whole reason that Dry Babe came into being – those long sleepless nights I spent suffering from night sweats had to amount to something!

For a long time, I would wake up at least once during the night soaking wet.  I had to get out of bed, towel off, change clothes and then try to get back to sleep. Does this sound familiar? Sometimes, hours later, there would be a repeat performance. Often, I would attempt to prod my husband to move over a bit to avoid sleeping in the “wet spot.” And the nights of interrupted sleep wore on and on.

At some point, I had the ingenious idea to sleep with a hand towel across my chest, between my skin and PJ’s. This worked wonders and I was now getting uninterrupted sleep. However, one July morning, I woke up before my husband.  He looked so peaceful and handsome. I then looked down and noticed the hand towel bursting out from the top of my night gown. This look was anything but cute.  I became incensed that there was no better solution – either sleep with a towel or wake up during the night wet? What kind of choice is that?

I got out of bed with a gleam if determination in my eye, fired up my lap top and got to work researching fabrics.  I had already spent the last three years trying every lotion, potion and garment for night sweats. Since the best solution so far had been the towel, I decided that I needed to start with fabrics that absorb.

This was a good plan because absorbent fabrics tend to be made from cotton and other natural materials.  I find polyester scratchy and uncomfortable and besides, it traps heat.  I bought small quantities of all the different types of cotton and high cotton content blends and tested them one per night for absorbency, comfort and softness.

After a while, I found the ultimate fabric that kept me dry and comfortable and tested it further by having a night gown made up in the fabric. It was important to me that the gown not only do its job (absorb moisture) but had to also be something that looked good on the body and felt good to the touch. No great granny looking night gowns need apply.

I had high hopes and some trepidation when I wore the night gown for the first time.  Will it do its job?  Will it be comfortable? Will it allow me to sleep through the night?  Turns out, the answer to all three questions is a big resounding YES! Eureka and hallelujah!  Sleep salvation can be found in sleepwear after all.

Not wanting to keep this sleep solution to myself, I went on to create Dry Babe so that other women can find comfort and a peaceful night’s sleep.  The response to Dry Babe has been overwhelming positive and we have received countless emails and testimonials that typically sound like this one:

I must say I didn’t wake up sweating at all with this beautiful night gown. Not only did I wake up dry I also had a good night sleep. YAY!!”- L.C.

We at Dry Babe are honored to provide a sleep solution that works wonders on those problematic night sweats.

  1. Barbara – I’m thrilled you’re offering the information about this and brought in this guest post. I’ve slept in T-shirts and tank tops for so long, I’m not sure my husband would know what to do if I actually wore a nightgown to bed, but if it helped me not wake up in soaked clothes, yeah!! If I don’t win, I’ll need to find where they are sold and try it out anyway.

    • Hi Chris,

So funny, I know exactly what you mean – although my husband is thrilled that he no longer gets woken up by me getting up in the middle of the night to dry off.

Dry Babe is sold on our own site – http://www.drybabe.com.

We have other styles other than night gowns, we also have a tank top and boy short (which may be less of a surprise to your husband :) as well as robes. New styles are added seasonally. Good luck on your entry!

  2. I noodled around on Dry Babes website as a result of your post. I love their nightgowns. Why hasn’t someone thought of this before? Thanks for the great info.

    • Hi Irene,

Desparation was the mother of this invention!!! I spent way too many nights suffering and was inspired when I realized I was far from the only one. Good luck in the giveaway.

  3. I’d love to win one! I suffered from night sweats for years. They’ve tapered off mostly but every once in a while I still get one (and recall how dreadful they were). Thanks for finding a solution to the wet nightie problem!

  4. Sign me up for this!! I am deep in the hormonal havoc of perimenopause and I am thinking that a good nights sleep is just not happening for me for the next few years. My husband uses a minimum of 3 additional blankets during the night right now while I am waking up radiating heat. I am a small person and somewhat cold natured and so this comes as quite a surprise. I would love some sleepwear that would help me get through the night. I’m thinking my husband would appreciate it too. :)

    • Hi Nancy,

I hear you sister! You are singing to the choir. I promise you that Dry Babe will do the job for you. It can’t stop the night sweats, but it does an amazing job soaking them up so they don’t bother you.

Best of luck in the giveaway.

    • A great strategy for many nights- the only problem is that on nights when you sweat, even the thinnest PJ’s can be a wet nightmare. Dry Babe is made of a light weight high cotton content blend – the cotton for absorption, a little bit of poly for lightness and a bit of stretch.

I have some younger clients that wear it for comfort and don’t need it for functionality.

  5. Having to begin dealing with this issue at age 46 has been tough but what a great solution this is! I would LOVE to win.

    • Thank you! Lucky lady to start at 46; I started with night sweats when I was 40.

Necessity was truly the mother of invention.

Best of luck in our giveaway!

  6. And I, also, would like to win a Dry Babe gown. I’ve tried making my own sleepwear out of cottons, out of silk, and I would love to see and touch this miracle fabric!

    • I am smiling – sounds like me when I was trying everything just to get a good night’s sleep. I truly promise that our wonderful light weight fabric does the job.

    • Hi Rosa – don’t I know it!!! I promise that Dry Babe will soak up those nightsweats before you are aware that you are sweating. One of my customers thought she had stopped having night sweats altogether. It wasn’t until she wore something else one night that she knew she was greatly mistaken!

  7. I would love to win one of these. I am just starting to wake up feeling a bit sweaty on the back of my neck and my chest. More to come I am sure!

  8. Luckily I didn’t have too much trouble with night sweats. But for those who do, I am sure they are thrilled to find nice looking gowns, etc. to sleep in. Great name too!

    • Thank you!! The name was my very creative husband’s contribution. So glad to hear that you are not too troubled by the sweats. Good luck in the giveaway – you don’t need to have night sweat havoc in order to love the gown.

  9. I’d like to win this nightgown ‘cos at night I’m drenched in sweat,
And I’m fed up being grumpy and waking up all wet!

  10. Sure, I’ll bite! I, too, have been waking up ‘grumpy’ although I call it ‘mildly sad’. I’m 60, and never thought I’d be flying solo and working my butt off in these ‘golden years’! I recently came to the conclusion that I need to quit buying black clothes, which have become my trademark. I have thoroughly enjoyed your site, especially the dreaded dating stories. I will be one of those who probably will write a book about it. cheers!

    • Thank you, Judith! Much appreciated. I love it when women in the know understand what we are doing. Best of luck in the giveaway.

    • Hi Robin – a lot of medications come with night sweat as a side effect. So sorry to hear you are suffering from both an injury and the sweats. Good luck in the giveaway and feel better.
