We did it! We finally updated our wills. And we had a wonderful time. For real. Why did we have such a happy and meaningful experience talking about dying?
We’ve been putting this off forever, so signing those suckers felt like a great accomplishment.
Our young lawyer, Shirley Dieffenbach, is whippersnapper sharp, witty, and fun to be around.
The law office was a pleasant place to be. They even brought me a coke one afternoon. A really cold coke.
And since their name is Walker Lambe, they display some eye-catching art.
On any given day, I can get sad, scared, or just plain creeped out when I think about dying. The thought can send me to a very dark place.
But creating a will felt like a great celebration of my life.
Deciding where my money should go gave me a chance to dig deep and think about those I love. And deciding on charitable legacies helped me ponder my beliefs as to what is important in this world.
Making choices on the kind of death I’d like to have made me hopeful that I can go peacefully.
I was so delighted when we finally signed the documents that I took a picture of the pen
and a picture of Cliff signing his.
The day after we signed our wills, we left on a snowbird trip to Cabo, Mexico. Day of the Dead stuff is everywhere.
I drank margaritas next to these lovely ladies knowing that when my time comes, my will is finally in place.
And until then, I’m going to do my best to whoop it up.

We also use Walker, Lambe and had them write up a full estate planning document. Not sure that was as much fun as you had writing your will, but certainly a relief that our children will have all our finances taken care of for them when our time comes. Should make it stress free for them.

I think ours went so well, in part, because we started the process a few years earlier and then stopped because of job stuff with Cliff or some other reason that made him feel too busy.

Yes, will making is important. But i have to say that all the skeletons and stuff around Halloween (and the pictures you posted of Mexico) make me think how people are afraid of death. As a Christian, I’m not. For which I’m HUGELY thankful. Now getting old… that’s another matter. Not afraid, just not liking some of the physical down sides !

The aging stuff is getting to me a bit too! I do use people older than I am as models and that helps…

Walker Lambe? How cute!! I work as an RN at a hospital and can’t stress enough how important it is to have an advance directive and medical power of attorney (and to really trust that person to make decisions in your best interest). Good job!

Yes, definitely. Unfortunately, what I sometimes don’t see honored is the medical power of attorney’s decision matching the patient’s.

I found that it was a peace of mind having our wills and power of attorney put in place. The only thing I have truly neglected are funeral decisions – I should also complete those. My hope is that it takes the stress off the children.

Trip was great. Thanks! Gosh, I know I want a funeral (as opposed to my mom who wanted none). But not sure on details. Will ponder! Going to go the cremation route.
